Spoken word is a form of poetry that is performed. The essence of spoken word comes from the way poetry is performed which included styles from poetry, hip-hop and can also be accompanied by beats. As all poetry, this too is a form of art and has developed into a culture of its own. Spoken word artists can be found performing regularly at coffee houses during open mic nights along with other greater, grander events and venues. Similar to the Nasheed competition, the purpose of this competition is to educate the youth about the teachings of Islam through one of the society’s most effective mediums and inspire them to increase their knowledge and become compassionate, striving individuals.
