UPDATE: Additional Fees include the Round-trip Bus fare and the 2-night Hotel stay, costing about $120 for competitors and $150 for guests and coaches.

Please note that we are working to fundraise and cover most of the costs for competitors, so please keep your eyes out for our fundraising plans and updated costs for transportation and hotel lodging in the next few weeks!

Hotel & Transportation

While the Nationals website has stated to arrange your own lodging arrangements, DC MIST will be setting up ALL lodging arrangements for those of you planning to stay with the team!

We will be staying at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Downtown Detroit – Fort Shelby. Hotel amenities include free wireless internet, continental breakfast, and $15 overnight parking.

Qualifying Rules

If you placed top five in any individual competition at Regionals, you are automatically qualified to compete at Nationals. Individuals may only compete in the competitions in which they qualify.

Group projects work a little differently (Web Design, MIST Bowl, and Group Projects). If your school qualified by placing top five in these competitions, your team may send any competitor to represent your school in these competitions at Nationals, as long as the student was registered as a competitor on your team at Regionals.

For Basketball, only individuals who competed with teams that placed top three may register for Nationals in Basketball. No replacements allowed.

Nationals Competitions

UPDATE: DC MIST will be hosting a few training sessions this summer to improve submissions and practice interviewing for Nationals! We’ll also include a MIST station for lost-and-found items from MIST Regionals, and for those of you who filled out the post-DC MIST Regionals Survey.

The early submission deadline  for the following competitions is June 21:

• Graphic Design
• Poetry
• Prepared Essay
• Short Fiction
• Short Film
• Social Media

The theme for Nationals is the same as Regionals. All rules and topics will be the same as well.

All work submitted for Regionals may be resubmitted for Nationals, either as-is, in a modified state, or entirely new. As always, it must represent the original work of the competitors. Any outside help/inspiration used must be given proper credit and citation.

Regional specific competitions are not included at Nationals. Quran Recitation Level 3 winners may compete in Quran Recitation Level 2. Level 3 competitors will be tested on the same material they memorized for Regionals.

From March 3- 15, YOUR TEAM will have the opportunity to create your very own epic chant video! DC MIST encourages you to be creative with your chants while adhering to proper Islamic etiquette. The MIST board will choose the winning Epic Chant, which will then be shown during the Awards Ceremony during the MIST weekend!

The video must not be any longer than 1 minute in length.

Q: What are the major changes to competitions this year?
A: Quran

• The competition has been split into two levels (1 and 2) and both involve tajweed.
• Quran competitors will ONLY be competing in Grade 9 material for this year
• There will be no level 3 competition in the DC region.

Improv:

• Competitors cannot bring together individuals from different schools to form an improv team

Bowl:

• Competitors must wait until the question has been completely asked before buzzing in

Social Media:

• Rules can now be found in the Rule Book.

Basketball:

• Requires a minimum of five (5) team members. If your school cannot register at least 5 boys or 5 girls for a team, your school may collaborate with another school and compete together for this competition. All points and awards for this competition would be shared equally between collaborating schools (termed “coalitions”).

• Any form of cheating: -10 points
• Disqualification (not based off cheating): 0 points

Q: May I include soft tunes (light strings or noises that aren’t made by the drums or people) in my nasheed?
A: No, you may not. The only instrument that may be used is the drum. Everything else must be done by the singers.

Guidelines/Rules for MIST T-shirt submissions

• The design must include the phrases, “DC MIST 2013,” and “The Patience of Champions: Rising to a Better Self”
• Only 2013 MIST competitors may submit a design.
• More than one designer may collaborate on a design, but only ONE submission per team.
• Designers from different MIST teams may not collaborate on a design.
• The submission must be in one of the following formats: jpeg, gif, png, tiff, eps, bmp.
• The design file can not exceed 2 megabytes.
• The design can not use more than two colors.
• The design will be printed on a white long-sleeved shirt. Please keep this in mind when choosing colors for your design.
• The design must be appropriate to be placed on the front of the t-shirt.
• The shirt may not include text on the sleeves or back. Please only use the front of the t-shirt for your submission.
• The design must be appropriate for a MIST competitor to wear. DC MIST reserves the right to disregard any design submission that it deems inappropriate.
• Design submission must be emailed to marketing@dcmist.com by 11:59pm on February 24th, 2013. Please, include the designer’s name and team affiliation in the email.
