Basketball
MIST is a fun, educational, interactive program of competitions & workshops geared towards bringing high school students together.

The MIST Basketball Tournament returns in the weekend immediately following the DC MIST regionals. Get your team signed up today by registering at www.adderpit.com/MIST.

Remember: In order to be eligible to compete in The MIST Basketball Tournament you must have registered as a competitor for the DC MIST regionals and attended the tournament.

If  you have any questions or concerns about team formation be sure to email our registration team at registration@dcmist.com. Look below for some FAQs:

What if our school doesn’t have five competitors registered for basketball? Can we still compete?
- Of course you can! Just be sure to inform our registration team at registration@dcmist.com to let them know about it ASAP. Basketball is different from other competitions in that it literally requires a minimum number of competitors in order to enter. With this in mind we hope to not bar competitors from participating in the competition simply because of a lack of numbers. And so in the past we have combined teams that don’t have the five player minimum.

If I can’t make it to MIST, can I still compete at The MIST Basketball Tournament?
- No. The requirement to be eligible for The MIST Basketball Tournament is attendance at MIST as a competitor. In fact, your MIST ID badge will serve as an entry ticket into the games.

Where can we look for any updates about basketball?
- Check us out at facebook.com/dcmist and be sure to check this page here!

Why isn’t basketball during MIST weekend or before it? Because we don’t get any points for it…if it’s after the award ceremonies.

Thank you for your interest and the question about MIST Basketball. The decision to schedule the Basketball Tournament after MIST was made in order to further emphasize the interscholastic tournament itself. In this way the focus shifts to “in order to compete in the basketball tournament you MUST compete in the interscholastic tournament.” This places additional importance MIST proper over the basketball tournament. The interscholastic tournament is the premiere event where an overwhelming amount of resources and activity goes into so we felt it only appropriate that it receives an equivalent level of attention and focus.

We understand your concern, however, the basketball tournament still recognizes a 1st – 5th place finish with trophies for the top 3 and qualification for Nationals. Thank you for your question!

Oh, okay but it’d be the same if we did it the weekend before MIST because we get points for it.

Will parents be allowed to purchase tickets to the games? or Will only MIST participants be allowed to enter?

Thank you for the question! Yes, parents will be allowed to spectate the games this Saturday and no they needn’t pay a registration fee at the door. Do bear in mind that there won’t be any chairs or benches for them to sit on throughout the tourney. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Thank you for the question. Yes, women are allowed and encouraged to come and spectate the women’s games, insha’Allah. The same applies for men spectating the men’s games. However, the same spectator rules for nasheed from the regional tournament applies here for basketball. That is we don’t allow for men to spectate women’s games nor for women to spectate men’s games. Thank you again for the question and we look forward to seeing you all come Saturday!

If a team does not have enough players that can go to Toronto for nationals may the replace those players with players from other MIST teams.

Thanks for the question! If your team that qualified for Nationals doesn’t have enough players to compete at Nationals you have the option of either having other MIST competitors from your high school join the basketball team or merge with the other qualifying teams. Be mindful, however, that the decision to join has to be an agreement between both teams and that the other teams that placed do have the option to not add others to their team. Thank you again for your question and we look forward to seeing you at Nationals insha’Allah!

If they have players 5, but 3 others that lets say do not have a passport, the team may not get players from a team that did not place, to clarify my question.

But did play on another MIST team

Thanks for the clarification. That is correct – the roster registering for the Nationals teams must come from teams that qualified for Nationals. So you cannot, say, pull players from the 6th place team to a basketball roster since that team did not qualify for Nationals. We hope that this clears things up a bit!

In the case of two whole teams not going to Toronto, whould the next teams be able to step up, and If this is the case would the team be informed much ahead of time. Who will be going and not.

Thanks for the question. We’re really happy to see that the excitement for Nationals in Toronto is building, alhamdulilah!

Yes, if any one of the Top 3 teams are unable to compete then the next option goes to the 4th place team. If two of the Top 3 are unable then the 4th and 5th place teams have the opportunity. However the cutoff is at the 5th place team so under no circumstances can teams that placed lower than 5th compete.

Walaikum salaam and thank you for the question!
We’re all excited about Nationals, however, as of now it’s particularly difficult to forecast which teams will be in attendance. We should have a much stronger idea come May 22 (our regional deadline to register), however, until then we can’t say with certainty which teams will and won’t register for Nationals. Stay tuned on http://www.facebook.com/dcmist for any of the latest news about Nationals!
